County Community College Offers College Credit to High School Students
Sussex County Community College recently hosted a taste of campus life for Hopatcong High School students who are enrolled in the SCCC/High School Concurrent Program. The seniors visited classes in philosophy, humanities, psychology, effective speaking, and Spanish. A pizza lunch followed with the opportunity to meet the SCCC president, Dr. Brad Gottfried and the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Anita Ulesky. The SCCC/High School Concurrent Program is an innovative program in which high school seniors earn college credits while still attending high school. This type of program is growing in popularity as it gives students a head start on their college general education courses. The courses are carefully monitored by SCCC faculty and administrators to ensure that the curriculum and grading standards are identical to those of the same course offered at the College. The credits readily transfer to most colleges. The Hopatcong students are taking Composition I and Composition II. Upon successful completion of the classes, the seniors will have earned six college English credits while simultaneously fulfilling the requirements of high school senior English. Under the direction of District Curriculum Supervisor Leslie Meskin and teacher Jason Ellrott, Hopatcong High School is the first in Sussex County to implement the concurrent program. Many other school districts plan to participate in the Fall 2003 semester. For further information on the SCCC/High School Concurrent Program, please contact Anita Ulesky, Vice President of Academic Affairs at 973-300-2130. Sussex
